Coil coating decision guide

UV vs thermal curing: evaluate the complete process.

The curing source cannot be selected in isolation. Chemistry, film performance, substrate temperature, line speed, ventilation, cooling and product qualification must be reviewed as one system.

Different energy paths, different system consequences

Thermal curing transfers heat into the coated strip and depends on time, temperature and oven behavior. UV curing uses radiation matched to the coating chemistry to initiate the cure. This can change equipment footprint, energy profile and process response, but it does not remove the need to control coating application, strip temperature, ventilation and cooling.

Compare the production system—not only the lamps or oven

  • Qualified coating chemistry and required cure dose.
  • Material grade, thickness, width and incoming temperature.
  • Target line speed and production schedule.
  • IR pre-heating or substrate-conditioning requirement.
  • Ventilation, pressurization and plant environmental conditions.
  • Exit-temperature limit and available cooling capacity.
  • Maintenance, lamp lifecycle, cleaning and spare-parts strategy.
Commercial principle

The right comparison is total installed cost and validated production performance—not the purchase price of one process component.

Define acceptance with representative material

A project should agree the coating, substrate, speed, cure measurement, surface appearance, adhesion and other quality tests before final acceptance. Material trials and measurable criteria protect both the processor and the line supplier.
